Key steps in the history of life, shown as animals in their own landscapes. Tiktaalik and Acanthostega move from lagoon to mudflat, an Ichthyostega-like creature crawls onto a pebble beach, the sail of a Dimetrodon glows at sunrise, and two lemur-like Notharctus sit on a mossy branch in an Eocene rainforest.

Two Diplocaulus amphibians with distinctive boomerang-shaped heads swim through the dark, misty water of a prehistoric swamp at dawn, illuminated by a shaft of sunlight filtering through horsetail plants.

A dense carpet of small, stalked plants with round spore caps grows on a wet, muddy shoreline under a low dawn sun, with rocky outcrops and a grey sea in the background.

A cat-sized Thrinaxodon curled up at the entrance of its burrow in a frosty, pale Triassic landscape at dawn, with its breath visible in the cold air.

A Triadobatrachus with a long body and a short tail sits on a mossy log over a stream in a fern-filled forest at dusk, with a dragonfly hovering nearby in the golden light.

A Proterosuchus reptile with a hooked snout rests on a mossy fallen log in a prehistoric fern forest, illuminated by shafts of morning sunlight.

A Dimetrodon with a large, glowing orange sail stands on a red mudflat at sunrise, with mist rising over a braided stream and dew-covered horsetails in the foreground.

Two lemur-like Notharctus primates with large eyes sit on a mossy tree branch in a misty, sunlit Eocene rainforest.

An Ichthyostega-like creature crawls from the surf onto a black pebble beach at dusk, with water dripping from its body and the low sun illuminating the scene.

A painterly reconstruction of prehistoric evolution showing a fish swimming in a shallow lagoon, a Tiktaalik standing in the shallows, and an Acanthostega on the muddy bank under a low morning sun.

A small, shrew-like mammal with large eyes stands on a cycad frond in a dark, moonlit prehistoric forest, with the large foot of a dinosaur visible in the background.

An Indohyus wades through a shallow, misty stream in a lush, sunlit forest, with its reflection visible in the water.

A Eudimorphodon flies low over a turquoise lagoon, its jaws open to catch a fish, with its wings backlit by the morning sun against a backdrop of limestone cliffs and prehistoric vegetation.
