I see Hoani as a 20 something North Island Māori man in 1880 colonial fashions. Perhaps he mixes his traditional everyday clothing with colonial wear ? He possibly has longer dark hair that he keeps tied up in the way a colonist male might do. He may have facial hair, to blend slightly with the colonists. His face is a misfire of strength, pride, defiance but also, fear, worry and bone weary from evading the colonial forces who stole him from his tribe and made him a prisoner in his own country.
