The sketch depicts a a small bundle of reeds, even though it looks more like a strand of gras. I used pastel colours. The reed grows out of muddy water. The red and green of the reed and the water enforces the contrast between the two of them. Everything is very saturated and gives of a free sketchy vibe. I tried to show the texture of the water by forming circles around the root of the plant that are supposed to look like riffled water. The reed also reflects on the surface of the water. From the root to the tip of the reed, the colours transition from dark green to yellow. It adds depth and looks lively. I painted the picture as a university project. The task was to go outside our building and try to imitate the workflow of impressionists from the early 19th century. Impressionist tried to capture the light and atmosphere of the moment rather than what the subject itself looked like. That is why they often worked fast and tried to finish their piece before the light could chance. I used the same method and only spend a few minutes on my sketch. It was sadly very cloudy that day, so l wasn t able to incorporate stark contrasts in value, which is why I chose a contrast in colour and form instead. I wouldn't say it's my favourite piece but it's one where I had a lot of fun during the process, so it stayed on my mind as a positive memory. Mehr sehen
