Tall straight conifer trunks with scaly grey bark stand among beech, sycamore maple and oak; several trunks are thickly clad in ivy; a fallen trunk lies in the undergrowth. The forest floor is a dense knee- to waist-high green carpet of brambles, ground elder and balsam, growing right up to the edge of the monument ground. Around the monument itself, and in a strip about 10 m long along the axis, the ground is mown short — rough uneven forest grass, with the wood standing directly at its edge.
