Economic: Before the attack, The Us was still recovering from the massive effects of the Great Depression and American industry was not yet ready to take on the effects of an attack or another war. After the attack, the economy turned its attention almost fully towards military production. Factories that used to be made for production of goods for consumers were then being used for tanks, planes and weapons, eventually leading to an economic boom. Unemployment ended up decreasing as millions found jobs in defense industries. The government spending increased, and mobilizing the economy for world war resulted in ending the Depression, as isolation had limited America’s economic expansion abroad but war opened global markets and expanded the U.S economic influence. Socially: Prior to the attack, a lot of Americans actually favoured isolationism and saw World War II as a problem that solely Europe had to deal with. But due to the attack, patriotism surged. Along with their declaration for love of their country, fear and suspicion towards many Japanese Americans led to internment camps. The attack may have unified Americans but it also highlighted the racial ideas that many Americans were exerting. Following the attack, many women entered the workforce and minority groups fought for a “Double V”, which meant victory against fascism abroad and racism at home.
