In the distant age of the yugas, when the universe was still finding balance between dharma and adharma, Sage Bhrigu lived in deep penance with his wife Kavyamata and their son Shukra, who would later become Shukracharya, the guru of the asuras and the planetary force of Venus. During a devastating war between devas and asuras, defeated asuras fled for refuge to Bhrigu’s ashram. In the absence of her husband and son, Kavyamata, moved by compassion, used her immense spiritual power to paralyze the pursuing devas. When Vishnu learned of this act, he foresaw that unchecked mercy toward adharma could tilt cosmic balance. Bound by duty rather than anger, he struck down Kavyamata. Upon returning, Bhrigu cursed Vishnu in grief, while Shukra’s sorrow ignited into uncontrollable fury. That rage transformed into a cosmic fire, from which arose Agnimasura, a being born of flame, ash, and wrath. Under Shukracharya’s guidance, Agnimasura mastered yagna, astrology, and destructive energies, growing so powerful that even the Trimurthis were challenged. As Agnimasura scorched worlds and threatened creation itself, the devas sought refuge in Vishnu. Vishnu realized that neither preservation nor destruction alone could stop this force. He approached Shiva, and together they went to Satyaloka to seek Brahma’s counsel.
