Vintage WWI propaganda poster featuring a running soldier with a wide-open mouth, against a backdrop of military tents and trees, with text encouraging enlistment.

Context:By February 1915 recruitment for the war within Australia was dropping. This led to the establishment of state based recruiting campaigns and a change in methods of attracting men to enlist. Instructions:Working individually or in pairs, create your own WWI propaganda poster to encourage/entice young men to enlist or to improve enlistment numbers. Focus on creating an emotive image and text reflective of the time period (early 20th century). Colour the words you want to emphasise. Research slang terms of the time period such as 'Coo-ee' (a call for your mates) , digger (an Aussie soldier), a bludger (lazy person), strewth (feeling surprised/shocked), cobber ( a friend/ mate), 'G'day (hello), larrikin (a rebellious young man), fair dinkum (truth/ true statement/information), sheila (a young woman/ girl); bonza (excellent); furphy (a rumour/tale). Will you be appealing to their patriotism? mateship? sense of duty? Guilt? sense of adventure ? Money? peer pressure? One, some or all of the above? Link to the reason/s why men initially enlisted. You could align your poster to the values and attitudes of society at the time, eg, white feather as a symbol of cowardice. Voir plus
