In this assignment, you will create a hand-drawn, fully hand-colored illustration (no significant white spaces) that compares how two different authors (like Rowlandson vs. Cooper) view the same subject, ultimately the idealization of the American Indian. First, you will need to read the article by Mary Arnold, "Romantic Idealization of the American Indian" (this text will be included in your notes as well as in your Module 5 test) which explains these ideas and provides specific examples of the nobilization and condemnation of the American Indian during this time period. The Canvas: Divide the page diagonally with one side representing the positive idealization of the American Indian and the other side representing the dehumanizing, condemning romanticization of the American Indian. The Requirements: Side A (The "Captivity" Lens): Suggestions: use jagged lines and dark colors. Students must include at least two "dehumanizing" quotes (cited from different authors) and illustrations from the texts assigned that reflect the dehumanization and condemnation of the American Indian. Side B (The "Romantic" Lens): Suggestions: use flowing lines and natural, earthy colors.
