The mirror mudskipper is a slender, six-legged creature up to 2.8 m long, up to 1.6 m at the shoulder, and weighing approximately 500 kg. Its silhouette is elongated, with a raised chest. Its scales are its primary shield: large, smooth plates reflect the surroundings like liquid mercury, instantly adapting to the sky, rocks, or water. Its eyes are large, pupil-less, pale blue, with a mirrored layer that shimmers with a cold, metallic sheen. It has six legs: the front legs are long and prehensile, with retractable, sickle-shaped claws; the middle legs are powerful and capable of jumping, with elastic webbing between the toes; the hind legs are short and agile, like balance beams. The tail is almost as long as the bodyâ2.2â2.6 mâa flexible whip ending in a double-edged bony blade (triangular, up to 15 cm at the base), hidden in horny flaps. At rest, the blade is concealed; when the animal strikes, the flaps spread, revealing a dull gray, molecularly honed steel. Voir plus
