On the back of Epona, the duration of Link’s remaining journey was cut in half. It wasn’t long before he found himself approaching the edge of Hyrule Castle Town. Epona’s hooves went “tap tap tap” as they stepped across the drawbridge. The waters of the moat beneath them, that flowed from Zora’s River, were mostly serene, but for a moment, Link thought he spied the blue- and red-spiked fin of a Zora monster pop out from beneath the surface. He pulled on the reins to urge Epona to increase her pace, and they soon reached the other side of the bridge. At the edge of town was a guard house, decorated with small flags bearing the Hyrule crest, and multi-colored tape that blew in the wind. As Link and Epona approached, the guard stood outside having an argument with a young man dressed in a fine red cape. The guard waved his arms in anger, the sleeves of his long robe billowing around him. He chastised the young man, pulling a long green cap out of his hands, and yelled that he would have to pay a fine. Link brought Epona to a halt, and leapt down from his saddle, and the guard and the young man turned their attention to him. “What seems to be the trouble?” Link asked. “This man,” the guard yelled, “was caught attempting to rob a merchant here in town! He stole this cap!” The guard waved the green cap in his hand. Link thought its appearance odd. Where it came to a point at the top, it resembled the head of a bird, beak and all.
