This is the first theatrical LEGO movie to be distributed by Universal Pictures (and their Focus Features domestically) after the toy company parted ways with Warner Bros. after the disappointing performance of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. However, Pharrell Williams stated that the film has been in development for five years, and in 2024, it has been precisely five years since 2019, the last year of LEGO and Warner Bros.' deal, implying that the film was first in development at Warner Bros. before being shifted onto Universal following the passage of the film rights.
