Last year I decided to treat myself to monthly manicures. I look forward to these times of indulgence and to receiving such special care. My manicurist is now familiar with me and my preferences about nail length and shaping. After each visit I love looking at my nails and being reminded that a skilled professional is taking care of me. She never lets me down or disappoints me. One month while I was getting my manicure, I realized that for some reason, instead of relaxing, I was fretting over the end results. I kept up a running dialogue, “Remember how I like them shaped. Don’t leave my nails too long.” Of course the manicurist was such a professional that she just smiled and continued working. It was then, while my fingers were soaking in the warm soapy water, that I made the connection: Is this how I’m treating God? Am I instructing my Maker as to how my life should be shaped? Can I ever begin to match my limited knowledge to God’s infinite wisdom? Giving up control is difficult for me, as it is for many people. But God promises to guide our lives in ways that bless and prosper us if we allow it. See more
