A 1930s vintage illustration captures a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, at some point in the 1930s, in the ocean with a biplane flying overhead. The ship, the aircraft, and any personnel seen must be consistent with the time period in which this picture is set. The aircraft carrier, seen from its port side, is a large, grey-hulled ship with a flat flight deck, on which are parked more biplanes, which should be shown to the proper scale with the rest of the ship. Its single, “island” superstructure is small and flush to the starboard side of the ship, thus keeping the deck clear for aircraft operations, and includes a single funnel, and a single mast from which fly a colorful array of signal flags. Its bow is prominent in the lower right quadrant of the image. The biplane, positioned in the upper right half of the frame, is a dark blue-grey colored aircraft with two yellow wings, intricate rigging, and a propeller. A pilot is visible in the open cockpit. The sea is depicted with moderate waves. The lighting is diffused, suggesting an overcast day or late afternoon. The perspective is slightly elevated, looking down at the carrier and up at the plane. The overall atmosphere is historical and evokes a sense of early aviation and naval operations.
