Suzie woke to the sound of a blaring alarm, it sounded as though it was ten times louder than normal. She was nervous. Nervous that she would miss her flight, nervous that she might sleep through her alarm again if she snoozed it, nervous that the flight would fail in a trail of smoke and flames. Suzie was nervous about a lot of things. In fact, she worried all the time. But today she worried more than ever. This flight was important to her. By the time Suzie reached airport security, her nerves had climbed to an unbearable pitch. Her hands trembled as she placed her bag on the conveyor belt, watching it disappear into the scanner like it might never come back. A sharp beep cut through the hum of the terminal. The security officer’s expression tightened. “Ma’am, is this your bag?” Suzie’s stomach dropped. Of course it was. Of course something was wrong. The officer unzipped it slowly, methodically, as if uncovering something dangerous—until he pulled out her banana, holding it up like evidence. Suzie blinked, her anxiety scrambling for logic.
