Surrealist oil painting of a chimeric forest monster with tree-root tendrils, standing before a deep crevice in a dim landscape.

A surrealist oil painting in the style of Salvador Dalí, portrait orientation, aged canvas with fine craquelure (cracked varnish) texture. A vast dreamlike woodland-soil landscape at dusk: cracked, fissured forest floor of dark peaty earth and pale exposed roots, a deep jagged crevice running from the horizon to the foreground. The sky shifts from a stormy slate-blue and teal at the top down to a molten amber-and-gold sunset at the horizon, luminous and glassy. Centre stage: a bizarre chimeric FOREST MONSTER — a squat, salamander-like beast crossed with an anglerfish, its mottled bark-brown and moss-green body low to the ground on splayed clawed feet. It has enormous round staring eyes and a gaping circular maw ringed with pale teeth. Erupting from its head and back, a great fountain of writhing tendrils that are half fine tree-roots, half coral, half pale mycelial threads — curling, tangling, and rising high into the sky in elegant art-nouveau spirals. Scattered across the scene as surreal isolated objects, each casting a long theatrical shadow: a stack of antique leather naturalist's field guides with a quill in an inkwell and a thin rivulet of blue water trickling from them; a tiny Victorian couple in silhouette (a man in a top hat with a cane, a woman in a bonnet) standing at the edge of the crevice; delicate glass laboratory flasks and a conical beaker; a whisky cask perched on a distant cliff, tipped and gushing fire; a classical plaster bust of a man's head crowned Mehr sehen
