75-Minute Presentation & Lesson Script I. Introduction: The Interview (10 Minutes) Slide 1: Meet Jean-Michel. Start with a large photo of Basquiat. Teacher Script: "Imagine we are interviewing a legend. He didn't use a paintbrush like a magic wand; he used it like a megaphone. He started as a kid in Brooklyn who loved cartoons and anatomy books. He didn't want to draw 'perfectly'—he wanted to draw 'honestly.'" Slide 2: The SAMO Years. * Concept: Street art as a message. Vocab: Layout (where things go) and Space (leaving room for the message). II. The Biography (15 Minutes) Slide 3: The PBS Video. [Link to PBS/YouTube Biography]. Instruction: Give students the Printable Handout (detailed below) to fill out 3 facts while they watch. Slide 4: Why the Crowns? * Vocab: Symbolism. * Teacher Script: "In 8th grade, we know a crown usually means a King. But Basquiat used it to 'crown' his heroes—writers, athletes, and his family. He was telling the world: these people are important." III. Deep Dive: 8th Grade Vocabulary & Techniques (20 Minutes) Slide 5: Words are Pictures. * Vocab: Typography. * Technique: Explain that writing a word and then crossing it out is a "Basquiat Move." It makes the viewer lean in to see what’s hidden. Slide 6: Media Masterclass (Limited Supplies). * The Pencil: Use it for "Anatomical Lines" (bones, hearts, faces). The Crayon: Press hard to create a wax barrier. The Marker: Use bold colors over the crayon. The Colored Pencil: Use this to "shade" inside the Mehr sehen
