In 15 years I can see myself walking through the automatic doors of a hospital, the bright lights reflecting off the polished floors as the sound of monitors and quiet conversations fill the air. I will adjust my badge as I head down the hallway, already used to the fast pace and long hours, but still noticing the small moments as patients talk softly, and nurses move quickly from room to room. During my shift, I will step into a room where someone sits quietly, nervously picking at their blanket. I’m able to tell that they’re overwhelmed, the same way people get when everything feels uncertain. I pull up a chair and sit next to them, speaking calmly and trying to make them feel a little less alone. The room will feel quieter as we talk and the tension will slowly fade. Before I leave, I will pause for a second and tell them, “Once you start believing in yourself, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.” They will look up at me, a little more relaxed, and I can see that something small has shifted. Later, I will walk back down the hallway, the sounds of footsteps and distant voices echoing around me, thinking about how I’ve come and how this is exactly where I’m meant to be. I won’t second guess myself anymore and I will trust myself with how I handle things, I will be much more confident than I am now.
