Oil painting in the style of a 19th-century Romantic history portrait. A United Irishman of 1798 stands on a rocky rise, three-quarter view, gazing off to the left. He wears the uniform of Theobald Wolfe Tone as adjutant-general in French service: dark blue coat with high collar and gold facings, white breeches, black riding boots, tricolour cockade, and a bicorne hat. Hair queued and powdered in the late-Georgian manner, clean-shaven, lean features. His right arm is raised, gripping a tall wooden staff from which the green flag of the Irish Republic flown over GPO in 1916 streams across the upper half of the canvas, catching the wind. His left hand rests on a cavalry sabre at his hip. Muted, overcast sky in ochre and grey, loose impasto brushwork, warm earth palette, heroic low-angle composition. Mehr sehen
