Cymoctenoids are straight or crescent-shaped organisms comprised of multiple segments. From two layers of undifferentiated cells at either side of the organisms centre, new segments grow outwards. Each segment is adorned with one or multiple nodules, from which spindly, elastic stalks emerge. These stalks evolved from microscopic protein structures, and have adapted for the kinetotrophic lifestyle of the cymoctenoids. The longer stalks contain protein fibrils, which, when bent by flowing water, generate an electric charge through the piezoelectric effect, which powers a portion of the organisms metabolic processes. The shorter stalks function as feeding tendrils, which digest organic particles that have accumulated on the stalks. This is a requirement, as cymoctenoids do not fixate carbon dioxide from the water like algae do, but have to ingest organic compounds as a source of carbon. Along the ground, numerous shorter stalks act as rhizoids to anchor the organism to the sediment, to prevent getting swept away by strong currents. Mehr sehen
